The church funeral is ending and Hadiya Pendleton's casket is being taken to her final resting place.
NBC streamed the funeral live so I was able to watch it.
As many of the mourners spoke celebrating Hadiya's life, they said, "it's not politics, it's personal" as they noted all the national and international attention being focused on the young girl's murder.
There were many touching moments. So many young friends and relatives of Hadiya spoke of her sunny and humorous personality. Stories from best friends; songs from church members and friends; a cousin's poem; a little brother's jokes; choral music, dances and prayers. The mood was joyous and funny like Hadiya and somber for the tragic loss of a young person and her future.
This was a personal private funeral that the world intruded upon because of the national attention her death brought to the fight over gun control.
Sadly, I know neocons will not shed a tear for this young girl. They will find much to ridicule. I pray for this girl, her family, friends and community for their loss and grief. I also pray for the heartless neocons who lack a spiritual center and who will claim "it's politics."
As one mourner said, with all the recent deaths of so many young children by gun fire, some question why is the media making a big deal over Hadiya and the mourner explained because they needed a face and a name. So, even in death, Hadiya is helping others.
